An antique fire-clay bowl and pedestal column in the Italian Renaissance style with a fluted shaft decorated with candelabrum acanthus. Attributed to the Garnick Fire-clay Company.Circa 1857.

Notes: The Garnick Company known for being the biggest manufacturer of fire-clay articles worldwide, worked for a great number of famous architects and sculptors, Alexander "Greek" Thompson, among others and was represented at the Great Exhibition in 1851. The company stopped by the end of the 19th century after it had run out of clay supplies.

One New Change Keystones.
LION'S HEAD MASK
Circa 1957.Sculptor: Sir Charles Thomas Wheeler, President of The Royal Academy, 1956-66.

Provenance: Originally one of three keystones on the façade above the main entrance of the One New Change building in the City of London.

The building erected in the 1950s to accommodate the Bank of England's Accounts Department & demolished in 2007, occupied the whole site bounded by Cheapside to the north, Watling Street to the south, Bread Street to the east, Newgate to the north west and New Change to the west and filled a sensitive site in that it presented a backdrop to Christopher Wren's majestic Baroque St Paul’s Cathedral.

Bank of England Sculpture Collection :The new 'Old Lady of Threadneedle Street.'

A smaller version of the 1934 Art Deco sculpture still centering the pediment over the main entrance of the Bank of England Threadneedle Street frontage also sculpted by the same sculptor.

Provenance: This version was removed from high above the main entrance of the One New Change building in the City of London the building, erected in the 1950s to accommodate the Bank of England's Accounts Department Annexe and occupied the whole site bounded by Cheapside to the north, Watling Street to the south, Bread Street to the east, Newgate to the north west and New Change to the west and filled a sensitive site in that it presented a backdrop to Christopher Wren's magnificent Roman Baroque St Paul’s Cathedral. The building was demolished in 2007.

A large antique terracotta campana urn, possibly by Blashfield, decorated in the Greek Revival manner after Bertel Thorvaldsen and Thomas Hope. Frieze features under the anthemion motif beneath the rim show various figures of flower and fruit maidens, minstrels and an angel typical of Ancient Greek inspiration, the handles are butted by the heads of river deities. English, early 19th century.

Notes: Although not stamped the texture of the clay & the design is very similar to the work produced by J M Blashfield." There was an identical urn sold at a Sotheby's Sale on 21 Sept 1999.

One of four Portland Stone Keystones removed from the facade of St Thomas' Hospital London bearing the carved profile of Florence Nightingale surmounted by a representation of her famous lamp which as a nurse tending the wounded during The Crimean War she carried before her at night searching the battle fields for the fallen. The sight of her lamp shining through the dark brought hope to those waiting to be found.

She had been consulted by the Architect Henry Currey about the design for the new St Thomas' which was moved from it's 17th century site in Southwark to Lambeth Palace Road across the River Thames from The Houses of Parliament where it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1871. The design of separate blocks rather than in one large building which brought light and air to the wards was probably due to her influence.

It is carved in the shape of a Shield and bears some of the symbols of the Hospitals Crest; a Cross, a Tudor Rose flanked by two Fleur de Lys and a Spear - the original also bore a Fish on the Cross and a Chough ( associated with Thomas Becket from whom the Hospital took it's name ) in the top right quadrant.

Notes:Edith Cavell was a British nurse and patriot. She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from all sides without distinction during World War I, and for helping Allied soldiers to escape from German occupied Belgium. She was caught and arrested by the Germans, tried and found guilty of treason and was shot by a firing squad in October 1915.The Hospital was moved from it's 17th century site in Southwark to new buildings in Lambeth Palace Road, across the River Thames from The Houses of Parliament where it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1871.

A well carved antique stone pediment, carved in the Baroque manner, in the form of a plain oval cartouche under a crown, draped with abundant laurel swags supported on a scrolled cornucopia of fruit. The cartouche bears an inscription which reads 'Statuary and Mason' and this could be removed and re-carved.

A BAROQUE RELIC
A series of five large carved stone Metope elements in the Baroque Roman Revival manner.
They form a running frieze, the elements all being the same height, depicting several hunting and animal scenes. A wild boar hunt, a lion hunt and youths feeding goats centred by putti heralds blowing horns.The heads of the youthful hunters having being removed which could indicate they date from before the 17th century Commonwealth period of Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans, 1649-1660 when the Roundhead Parliamentry troops frequently defaced human features on statues for their so-called association with idolatry.
English or Welsh, 17-18th century.

Notes: The beheading and other acts of vandalism carried out on figurative carving was a regular practice done in the name of Puritanism at the order of Oliver Cromwell after Englands 17th century short lived Revolution and establishment of a Republic / Commonwealth (1649-1660) and before the restoration of the Stuart monarchy to the throne. See also our sold stock no 2871,
a pair of 17th century carved angels. whose faces were also removed, bought in an attic and stables sale at Hatfield House.

Condition: To be expected in a relic there are missing detail elements, apart from the presumed Cromwellian destruction, which could be reinstated. But part of the charm of these huge carved elements lies in leaving them in this unrestored state.

A very large arched carved stone pediment removed from the roof papapet over the main entrance of the Beaumont Hall Hotel, Clacton in Essex. The coat of arms shows two rampant Talbot hunting hounds supporting a central shield above which is a carved galleon, derived from the municipal crest of the town of Clacton, the whole carved with acanthus scroll work. Preliminary image before restoration and cleaning.

A massive carved Portland Stone Tableau of the reigning monarchs, William & Mary(1689-1702), granting The Bank of England Charter in 1694. Sculptor Esmond Burton (1885 – 1964).

Part of a collection of approximately 45 statues and carvings commissioned by the Bank of England to adorn it’s Annexe built in the 1950’s at One New Change in the City of London. They were removed prior to the building being demolished in 2007. This group was above the Cheapside entry to the courtyard and was flanked either side by statues of Sir John Houblon, the first Governor of the Bank and Michael Godfrey the first Deputy, please see third image below.

Notes: The building was erected to accommodate the Bank of England's Accounts Department and occupied the whole site bounded by Cheapside to the north, Watling Street to the south, Bread Street to the east, Newgate to the north west and New Change to the west. It was built on a World War II bomb site behind St Paul’s Cathedral and was sensitively designed in a graceful curve to follow the curve of the east end of Sir Christopher Wrens majestic Roman Baroque building.
