Shakespeare’s Macbeth is one of his great tragedies, chronicling the downfall of the iconic anti-hero as he realises his political ambitions. Macbeth carves a bloody path to the Scottish throne, spurred on by his ambitious wife, Lady Macbeth and the prophesy of three witches.

In the third act, Macbeth hosts a banquet as the newly crowned King. Burdened by the cost of the crown he is distracted and Lady Macbeth emplores him to entertain his guests. Macbeth then stands to make the following lighthearted toast:

Sweet remembrancer! Now, good digestion wait on appetite, And health on both!

After this toast, the ghost of the murdered Banquo takes his place at the table and Macbeth's composure wavers...

This charming set of three Arts and Crafts stained glass window panels with scrolled banners bear these words spoken by Macbeth as a toast to his guests.

The first panel depicts a friar or monk bearing a boars' head on a platter, the second depicts a seated king (likely to be Macbeth) holding a goblet, the third is of a courtier or Queen (Lady Macbeth) holding a bowl of fruit. These panels would have perhaps been designed for a dining hall or even a theatre. English School circa 1900.
