A rare and important small Palladian period chimneypiece in the manner of Giovanni Battista Piranesi(1720 -1778) or possibly Giovanni Valdier, carved in white statuary marble with Egyptian Imperial Porphyry inlaid marble panels.The simply shaped shelf characteristically densely carved with intricate acanthus leaves and lambs tongue motifs over large circular florally carved paterae flanking the high relief carved central plaque depicting scrolled flowers emitting peacocks either side of a wicker fruit basket, between twin Egyptian porphyry marble frieze panels supported on similarly panelled jambs.The ingrounds are decorated with continuous Greek key motif in statuary white marble. Provenance: Probably from the Rome workshops of Piranesi around 1760.
