A colourful Oriental style four fold hand painted and lacquered wooden room screen each shaped panel with a depiction of a young musician maid playing a flute. This is remarkably similar to an oil on canvas painting by Chen Yifei (1946-2005), a famous Chinese artist, painter and director please see last image. There is evidence that this screen has been over painted as shadowy outlines can be seen behind the figures and the screen and original paintings could be of an earlier date.

A massive aluminium heraldic spread eagle, with three Ducal coronets on it's breasts and wings the original emblem, without the three crowns was used by the Barclays Bank Group from the early 18th century. The three crowns were added in the 1930's to differentiate it from those emblems used for centuries in varying forms by royal households, countries and other establishments.
    English, 1930's.

Notes: When in 1728 the Barclays Bank company moved into the premises known as The Black Spread Eagle on Lombard Street in central London they adopted as their emblem the sign of a Black Spread Eagle which had been left by the previous unknown tenants of the building. The premises later became 54 Lombard Street. Barclays present day blue emblem, first introduced in the 1960's and adopted in 1970, is based on the old earlier logo as shown on the hanging Bank sign below.

Casting of monuments and works of art in aluminium was first used by Alfred Gilbert in 1893 for his statue of Eros (famously misnamed, the figure is in fact Anteros, his twin brother), the Greek God of requited love, which is poised on top of the memorial to Lord Shaftsbury in the middle of Piccadilly Circus in London's West End.

A large cast iron and bronze " Nautilus " log grate made in the nineteenth century by The Nautilus Fire Company of Yeovil, Somerset. The side floral decoration in the Renaissance manner, on four iron wheels, the front bar posts with large bronze spiral finials, a scrolled bronze canopy which revolves forward and back to reduce the airflow, and bronze trim either side.
English mid to late 19th century.

NOTES : When Queen Victoria had Nautilus fire grates installed at Balmoral Castle and Osborne House demand for them grew substantially. The design by the Petter family firm was based on the internal shape of the Nautilus shell by means of which the fumes and smoke circulated in a chamber before being drawn out through the flue.

    A BAROQUE RELIC
A series of five large carved stone Metope elements in the Baroque Roman Revival manner.
They form a running frieze, the elements all being the same height, depicting several hunting and animal scenes. A wild boar hunt, a lion hunt and youths feeding goats centred by putti heralds blowing horns. The heads of the youthful hunters having being removed which could indicate they date from before the 17th century Commonwealth period of Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans, 1649-1660 when the Roundhead Parliamentry troops frequently defaced human features on statues for their so-called association with idolatry.
    English or Welsh, 17-18th century.

Notes: The beheading and other acts of vandalism carried out on figurative carving was a regular practice done in the name of Puritanism at the order of Oliver Cromwell after Englands 17th century short lived Revolution and establishment of a Republic / Commonwealth (1649-1660) and before the restoration of the Stuart monarchy to the throne. See also our sold stock no 2871,
a pair of 17th century carved angels. whose faces were also removed, bought in an attic and stables sale at Hatfield House.

Condition: To be expected in a relic there are missing detail elements, apart from the presumed Cromwellian destruction, which could be reinstated. But part of the charm of these huge carved elements lies in leaving them in this unrestored state.
