Stock No.16759
A fine neoclassical chimneypiece of excellent proportions, carved from a pure white statuary marble and inlaid with panels of warm Spanish brocatelle marble. The reeded shelf rests over frieze of panelled brocatelle, set with a finely carved neoclassical tablet very much in the Adam style, carved with an urn and opposing sphynxes, and hung with bellflowers. The endblocks are carved with more slender covered urns and rest above the wide jambs, also set with brocatelle and enclosing the reeded slip bordering the opening. A very elegant late Georgian piece, anticipating the simple elegance of the Regency period.
English, c. 1800.
Footblock to footblock measurement: 151.2cm,
Largely original, with addition of later undershelf. Tablet has a rust stain, which can be restored if desired.
