Stock No.16701
A rare and beautifully engraved set of fifteen prints from the 'Fasti di Napoleone', or Glories of Napoleon, a cycle of frescoes designed and executed by Appiani in the Sala delle Cariatidi in Royal Palace of Milan between 1807-1816. This celebrated set of frescoes no longer survives after being lost to bombing in WW2, but Appiani supervised Giuseppe Longhi's creation of these engravings, so his cycle survives in this carefully rendered set of prints.
Our set of fifteen engravings are beautifully framed in ebonised frames, which can be beautifully displayed in three columns, or tessellated across a wall; we have the following plates:
Plate 7 - Napoleon and his troops entering Milan (right half of composition), 15 x 41.5cm; Plate 10 - the battle of Arcole (right half of composition), 15 x 50cm; Plate 12 - the battle of La Favorita, 15 x 48.5cm; Plate 14 - Napoleon's Egyptian campaign showing his troops arriving in ships and landing on shore in Egypt, and marching towards the right, 15 x 47cm; Plate 19 - an allegory of Napoleon being made First Consul of France (left half of composition), 15 x 46cm; Plate 20 - an allegory of Napoleon being made First Consul of France (right half of composition), 15 x 41.5cm; Plate 23 - the battle of Marengo, with dead and dying soldiers and horses in the right foreground, and in the left background cavalrymen and infantrymen going to the left (the first of four), 15 x 42cm; Plate 25 - the battle of Marengo, with soldiers engaged in battle at left, Napoleon on horseback receiving the wreath of victory in the centre (the third of four), 15 x 56cm; Plate 27 - an allegory of the convention of Alessandria, 15 x 41.6cm; Plate 28 - an allegory of the assassination attempt on Napoleon on 24 December 1800, 15 x 49cm; Plate 29 - an allegory of Napoleon becoming Emperor (left half of composition), 15 x 57.3cm; Plate 30 - an allegory of Napoleon becoming Emperor (right half of composition), 15 x 53cm; Plate 32 - three medals commemorating, at left, the Napoleonic victory at Millesimo and Dega, at centre, the victory at Castiglione and Peschiera, at right, the handing over of Mantua, 15 x 56cm; Plate 33 - three medals commemorating, at left, an allegory showing the personification of the young Republic and France (as Minerva) shaking hands above an altar; at centre, the crossing of the Tagliamento (16 March 1797) and the taking of Trieste (23 March 1797) by the French armies, at right, an allegory showing the personification of France, 15 x 55cm; Plate 34 - three medals commemorating, at left, France recognising the Cisalpine Republic, at centre, an allegory on the comizi (conclave) of Lyon, at right, profile relief of Napoleon as Emperor, 15 x 54.5cm
