A French cast iron fireback depicting a salamander the heraldic symbol of the French King François I (1515-1547). The salamander is shown surrounded by flames and as it was believed that they had mystical powers and could not be consumed by fire here it was meant to symbolise the strength and invulnerabilty of royalty.
