Stock No.15416
An elegant and large Bolection fire surround in warm, cream coloured Italian Travertine with evidence of sedimentary deposits, the outer moulding sweeping in to a cushioned frame around the wide opening.
English, or possibly Italian, early 20th century.
Travertine is a sedimentary form of limestone usually deposited by mineral springs. The Italian quarry of Guidonia Montecello was one of the quarries chosen by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the building of the famous Colonnade of St. Peter's Square in Rome in 1656–1667 and Michelangelo also chose Travertine as the material for the external ribs of the dome of St Peter's Basilica.
